One of the best things you can do for your health is to establish a regular workout routine. While your exercise preferences are your own, what your skin needs after a workout falls under a few general guidelines everyone should stick to.
It is true that regular exercise can improve both our health and appearance, but your post-workout skin has some specific demands. I have very sensitive skin that can get irritated if I don’t wash the sweat off shortly after I complete my workout.
What Your Skin Needs After A Workout
You might have a different problem, but even if you don’t, it’s extremely important to give your skin the proper care after a workout, if you want to keep it healthy-looking so here’s what you need to know.
Remove makeup and hair styling products before the workout
OK, this is not a post-workout skin care tip, but it does make a world of difference as to how your skin will look when you finish exercising. Sweat getting mixed with melting makeup and hair styling products that are slowly dripping onto your forehead can clog your pores and lead to breakouts.
The natural process of sweat can help your skin’s pores flush out impurities but not if you’re running on that treadmill with layers upon layers of foundation, mascara, lipstick and other makeup products on your face.
Working out is not a fashion parade so not only you don’t need to look like a supermodel during it, but no one expects this from you either. So do your skin some good and remove your makeup before you start exercising!
Do not wipe out sweat with your hands while you’re exercising
An intense workout can make you leave a puddle behind and you might be tempted to use your hands to remove the sweat that’s annoyingly dripping into your eyes. Use a clean towel instead and just gently tap your skin with it, as needed.
Or even better – wear a cotton headband (like the ones tennis players are using, there are plenty of stylish options out there) which will soak in the sweat and prevent it from dripping onto your face.
Give yourself a quick wash after you finish the workout
Obviously, no one wants to remain sweaty after a workout, but the sooner you do it, the better it is for your skin. If you actually care about what your skin needs after a workout, this is the single, most important thing. If your gym has showers, jump straight in and don’t wait to get home. Or at least wash your face.
How you wash it is also important. Use a gentle cleanser to prevent dehydration and avoid hot water. Luke warm should be enough. As for your body, a short shower will also do the trick. The longer you stay in, the more your skin will dehydrate.
….And don’t forget to moisturize
Regardless of what type of skin you have, it is extremely important to always moisturize it after a wash. Of course, you should use a moisturizer built with your specific problems in mind, and not just on your face.
Now that you know what your skin needs after a workout, there’s no going back to ignoring its needs, nor do you have any excuses to skip the post-workout skin care routine. It is definitely worth the effort as this can be the difference between a dull-looking skin, possibly with rashes and breakouts, and a beautiful, bright complexion. And we all want the latter right?
